🌍 Wild Mushrooms vs. Store-Bought Mushrooms

LIP #212

Most mushrooms at the grocery store are farmed, but some can only be found in the wild.

Why can't all mushrooms be farmed?
Mushrooms like chanterelles and black trumpets need to live near oak or chestnut trees to survive - you simply cannot recreate that on a farm.

Truffles: The World's Most Expensive Mushroom

Black truffles (Tuber melanosporum) can actually be cultivated, but it takes a long time:

  1. Add truffle spores to young tree roots
  2. Plant the trees
  3. Wait 10 to 12 years for truffles to grow

Truffles grow underground, so hunters use dogs (not pigs anymore) to sniff them out!
