Mushrooms are amazing living things, but always get expert help before picking wild ones - some can be dangerous!
Chanterelles are popular wild mushrooms found all across America:
- Smaller in West Virginia
- Bigger in Oregon and California
- Fresh ones last 7 to 10 days
How mushrooms grow depends on their type:
- Chanterelles share nutrients with tree roots underground - this is called a symbiotic relationship, which makes them impossible to farm
- Shiitake break down dead wood for food
- Chicken of the woods grows on living trees and feels like chicken when cooked
