🤝 The Fragility of Trust
Trust can be easily broken through seemingly minor acts of dishonesty, like saying 'I don't care' when you actually have preferences.
When working with long-term teammates, we often create mental simulations of conversations, thinking we know how others will react. This can lead to:
- False displays of open-mindedness
- Pretending to be easy-going when we have strong opinions
- The 'whatever you want' syndrome
Once trust is broken, even in small ways, it creates a ripple effect that makes others suspicious of everything else you say. Rebuilding trust requires superhuman consistency over extended periods.
Solution: Practice true honesty by acknowledging uncertainty or preferences rather than defaulting to 'whatever you want.'
