Reading Labels: What's Really in Your Protein Snacks? 🔍
Most protein snacks look healthy on the outside — but the label tells a different story.
Common traps to watch for:
- Protein bars (like Kind bars) — often contain more sugar than protein, with sneaky sugars like maltodextrin and sucralose
- Beef sticks (like Chomps) — dehydrated meat = concentrated sodium, which is linked to heart problems
- Greek yogurt — great protein source, but avoid versions with jam or fruit packets mixed in
- Protein drinks — better options are low in both sugar and sodium; cheaper ones usually have more of both
- Store-bought bars — cleaner options exist, but watch the fat content (one bar can hit 15% of your daily saturated fat)
The golden rule: The shorter the ingredient list, the better. If you can't pronounce it, think twice.
Making your own snacks at home is almost always the healthiest and cheapest option.
