💪 The Secret Power of Believing Someone Will Be Okay
What you believe about someone's ability to cope actually changes how well they cope.
In a famous rat study, rats swam for only 15 minutes before giving up. But after a brief rescue and rest, the same rats swam for 60 hours - because now they believed help was coming.
The same applies to people. Telling someone 'you will be okay' creates a completely different outcome than saying 'this will stay with you forever.'
We also make a mistake by turning normal emotions into medical emergencies. Sadness and nervousness are part of life - treating them as crises teaches people they cannot cope.
Remember: just like physical training requires discomfort, mental growth does too. The best coaches seek out the hardest challenges because that's where the biggest growth happens.
