๐Ÿ˜ฐ The Joy Paradox: Why We Brace Against Good Moments

LIP #197
Jul 16, 2025

According to researcher Brenรฉ Brown, joy is actually the most terrifying emotion humans experience. When things are going well, we often 'brace' ourselves - mentally preparing for something bad to happen.

This bracing is counterproductive because it:

  • Consumes energy that could be used for problem-solving
  • Prevents true alertness and responsiveness
  • Puts us in 'freeze mode' when we need flexibility

๐Ÿš— The Driving Analogy: Like gripping a steering wheel too tightly, being overly tense reduces our ability to react effectively.

True alertness lies in the middle ground - maintaining calm readiness without constant tension.

๐Ÿง  Brain Science: Our minds operate on three timeframes:

  • 10% present moment
  • 50% past memories
  • 40% future predictions

โœจ Practice full engagement in joyful moments while accepting their temporary nature.
