🤝 The Power of a Talking Partner and Going to the Hard Stuff First

LIP #286
Thursday

One of the most powerful tools through 958 days of a federal case was having a talking partner. But most people get this completely wrong.

The sequence that actually works:

  1. Train solo first — you have to be able to stand on your own before a partnership can work
  2. Seek feedback and reaction — expose your thinking to someone you trust
  3. Then find your teammate — now you can actually work together without becoming more dysfunctional

What a real talking partnership looks like:
Whole Saturdays were spent not on legal work, but on getting mentally right — processing fear, replaying decisions, naming the mental chatter that kept one person up every night.

It wasn't always pretty. Arguments at 3am, walking away furious, hitting different forks on decisions. But working through it together brings understanding.

The one tip that changes everything:
Don't spend an hour warming up to the hard stuff. Go to the difficult conversation in the first five minutes. The hard stuff isn't the obstacle — it's the doorway.
